Are You Ready for Hurricane Season?
Bringing high winds, heavy rain, and flooding, hurricanes and tropical storms can be devastating. The best defense against a storm is to be prepared. Use the following tips to help prepare for the hurricane season:
Do some homework
Find out if you live in an at-risk area, and make a note of when hurricane season occurs — usually June through November.
Watch the weather forecast daily and sign up for alerts offered by your local emergency management agency.
Learn the local evacuation routes, shelters, and emergency numbers.
Plan ahead
Create a family emergency plan for shelter.
Ensure your family has a communication plan in the event of an emergency evacuation.
Keep an up-to-date emergency kit on hand.
Stock up with supplies such as non-perishable food and water in case your home has a power outage.
Protect your home
Keep your property safe by trimming or removing damaged trees before hurricane season.
Reduce the risk of property damage by securing and reinforcing windows, exterior doors, and garage doors.
To prevent water damage to your property ,clear and secure rain gutters.
Purchase a portable generator and/or other alternate power or heat sources. Store it outside, at least 20 feet away from the exterior of your house, and protect it from moisture. NEVER plug a generator into a wall unit.
